Dodgeball, Cookouts, Keystone, A Concert and Fireworks. It Must be 4th of July!

Here at Camp Carolina we like to ensure our campers have the chance to celebrate, be surprised and have an awesome time. Birthdays, accomplishments and holidays included-and today was no exception. For a lot of our international counselors and campers 4th of July is an unheard of holiday. Yesterday morning however all the proud Americans at CCB made sure that everyone understood just how much Independence Day means to them and just how much fun the day was going to be!

The day began with red, blue and white decorations in the dining hall, a patriotic speech by JJ followed the national anthem sung by everyone who knows the words. After breakfast we had plenty of skill clinics (mountain biking, fly fishing, bridge building, rock climbing, movie making and horse decorating)  on offer as well as the campers regular in camp activities to keep everyone pumped up and busy. The huggers and CA’s also had the opportunity to go paint balling at Line of Fire this morning which we hear was awesome!

After lunch and a short rest hour our boys headed to the skate park and tennis courts for the ultimate dodge ball tournament! The boys were split into several teams and played round robin against one another until we had a team we could declare the 2012 main session dodgeball champions!

In the afternoon the lovely ladies over at Keystone Camp had the surprise news of the evenings program presented to them… They were heading over to CCB for an evening of fireworks, a concert and a good old-fashioned cookout. It was fair to say their excitement was heading through the roof by the time they arrived at Camp Carolina! The newts and dogs headed up to the dining hall with the younger girls and ate a delicious spread of coleslaw, beans, hot dogs, burgers plus lemonade and delicious cake supplied by Keystone while the Manders, Huggers, CA’s plus the older girls played a variety of  games such as watermelon seed spitting, volleyball, tennis, ultimate frisbee plus a few ice breakers and group games. The campers then switched over before the evening show began…

We have an amazing group of musicians on staff this year who are doing a great job teaching our campers how to play the guitar, bass, keyboard and drums. And yesterday, on the 4th of July they became the CCB band and put on a great concert for our boys and Keystone girls. We had a big stage set up in the skate park so campers could dance up a storm. After the concert the campers were treated to a trivia game show (5 British counselors answered some rather tricky American trivia questions). There was also some seriously good acting and stunts performed by the counselors (think galloping horses, canoeing British soldiers, flying bald eagles/parrots, Captain America Zip Lining with roman candles, flaming BMX bike riders flipping into the lake) all before a final fireworks display. The display went on for around 15 minutes and left all the campers watching in excitement from the other side of the lake. The Keystone girls left to the sound of our campers singing some of their favorite camp songs with gigantic grins on their faces-what a night!

The boys were still talking about the excitement of last night at breakfast this morning. Our 4th of July day was a great success, jam-packed with action, excitement and fun-just the way we like our CCB days to be. The Keystone crew also had an amazing time and we are excited to see them all again soon for a dance… Happy Independence day Y’all!
