Meanwhile in Scotland…

Spring time… Blue skies, nice warm afternoons, green grass and colorful flowers all “spring” to mind. It is a time of the year welcomed by everyone but especially people who have experienced long, cold, snowy winters. Like people from Scotland!guy 2

Guy Sloan who is an outstanding mountain biking counselor (also helped with climbing, mountain boarding and caving in 2012) is from the Isle of Arran, Scotland. Last week most of the UK experienced abnormally cold and snowy weather but Arran was one of the worst hit spots!

Around a week ago Arran was hit by a freak blizzard and ice storm conditions which knocked out the mains power to the entire island (the island isn’t huge!) and with winds in excess of 50mph th ferries that would normally have helped supply the island could not help them. Guy tells us they had 200 engineers shipped over to fix the damaged electricity pylons which had collapsed under the weight of ice stacked on them. Food supplies had to be airlifted to remote parts of the island until the wind had died off enough for the ferries to begin working again.

Guys workplace was turned into an incident control room housing all the emergency services, engineers and mountain rescue volunteers so Guy was put to work coordinating phone calls. Guys home town set up a free food shelter which helped everyone who had no electricity to keep warm and cook food. He says everything is now getting back to normal with the snow slowly melting…

Guy said it was like a “never-ending cabin day but with snow rather than heavy dew”

These experiences and stories that our international staff members bring with them is what makes CCB a truly international experience for our campers who learn so much about such a wide rang of places around the world.

Guy-It’s warming up at CCB, we will see you in a few weeks!

A Great Experience

We recently heard from a very happy parent who had some wonderful things to say about Camp Carolina. Cameron Langset is pursuing improving his lacrosse skills this summer and although we will miss him at CCB we wish him all the best! His dad, Kevin said the following…

Best of 3rd session (586)

Last summers’ camp experience was outstanding for him and he developed so much in so many different ways as you probably see in a majority of the boys each year. I must share that even if he does not come back in the future to Camp Carolina, his experience was a great turning point in his life. To this day, he talks about the counselors and excursions that they all experienced together. We are very grateful to all who made this such a positive experience.  You and your team do an incredible job of recruiting some outstanding staff and planning what boys want to do at their age.

Perhaps in a future summer if he does not play lacrosse he will be back to Camp Carolina or maybe as a counselor. Next school year Cameron is looking at attending a boarding school and we will say that if he does choose to go to boarding school we will value ever minute we have with him this summer. Hopefully with IMG_3257our cancellation another young man will get the same growth out of camp as Cameron experience.

We all believe that Camp Carolina really provides our CCB boys to grow and develop into young gentleman with passion and drive in life. As the weather starts warming up we are getting more and more excited for summer 2013!

A Campers First Year

We recently received a lovely email from a first time campers parents that we feel sums up justIMG_3257 how amazing that first year at Camp Carolina is. Alex Newton had attended the awesome Father-Son weekend with his dad Brian in 2011 and loved it so much he decided-Yes! I want to go for the summer on my own!

Best of First Session_2012 (325)

Alex’s parents Brian and Jenn emailed and said “First of all I would like to say how much our family loves your camp.  Our son Alex attended camp last year, and we did the father/son weekend the year before that.  We feel your camp is at the wonderful intersection of enthusiasm, confidence, and love for the outdoors. We marvel at how enthusiastic your staff are, and are simply blown away by the types of activities you offer at Camp Carolina.  Thank you for so much for providing such a wonderful and fulfilling opportunity for boys and young men.

They also emphasized how much enthusiasm and confidence Alex gained during his time at CCB and how much he loved having the opportunity to try so many new activities as a first year camper.

Alex said that “he really liked the horseback riding.  He also liked that you have your own private lake for kayak practice.  Also, he loved the outdoor activities and the “spend the night” activities, especially cabin day.  He really enjoyed his hike to “Hunger Games Falls”.  He also said “I never met a counselor that was mean.  All of the counselors were nice, everybody was nice!”  He can’t wait to do all of the activities he hasn’t tried yet.  Last but not least, he enjoyed the competitions with the girls (archery, riflery, and tennis).”

The email ended with this lovely message…
“Thank you again for providing such a wonderful place for children to spend their summers.  There is truly something special about your camp.”
Well Newton family we cannot wait to see you again for another incredible summer!

Who Likes Arts’n'Crafts? Jade Does!

Arts n Crafts is an awesome activity at Camp Carolina. The boys get to spend their time working on any creative projects that they choose and we have skilled counselors able to cover all aspects of the activity. The options are endless-wood work, hemp jewellery, painting, sketching, model making! We keep Arts’n'Crafts open BOTH free times for our crafty campers who want to spend extra time perfecting their projects.IMG_9547

We recently recruited Jade Marijarich from Perth,  Australia who has studied graphic arts and design. She says “I’m famous for my art, my sense of humor and my stir-fry chicken.” and is excited for “Meeting new people, experience new things and to having a great American Summer!” She says “The coolest place I’ve been would be Whistler, Canada. I spent a white Christmas there a few years ago, so beautiful.Coolest thing I’ve ever done would be skydiving, there’s nothing like it.”

She really looks up to her parents “My role models are my parents. They are hardworking and don’t let anything get them down. They are the ones I can go to whenever I need advice.” She also says ” I am from Perth, Western Australia which is the most isolated capital city in the world.”

Finally-what is your favorite hobby/activity ”Anything creative… painting relaxes me. And I love playing netball with my friends”

We cannot wait to have Jade arrive at CCB and start sharing her art skills with the campers!

97 Days!

As our campers and counselors all around the world are either waking up, having lunch, having dinner or sleeping soundly on this fabulous Monday-we at Camp Carolina have just one thing on our mind. Summer 2013 is getting closer! 97 days closer in fact… Close enough that counselors have started booking flights, campers parents are starting to plan and campers are just getting really excited! And on this Monday morning we would like to relive the memories of Opening Day for the first session 2012.
