Father-Son 1 Ready to Roll!

DSC_0141Today is an exciting day! Today is the day that we have CAMPERS (and their dads) back at Camp Carolina-the best place on earth! We have had father-son combos rolling down Lambs Creek rd all afternoon to spend a relaxing afternoon hanging out at the water front, playing some team sports and settling into their cabins. Tonight we have a delicious feast planned along with some get to know you games and introductions before a good nights sleep before Friday’s activities. Stay tuned to see what our father’s and son’s get up to this weekend…

The Camp Carolina Tradition

John King III, grandfather to current camper Robert King, sent us his Camp Carolina Merit Certificates from when he was a camper in 1956.  At the bottom he wrote, “I found these and I wanted to share them with you.  I loved my time at Camp Carolina and my two favorite activities were riflery and swimming.  I am Robert King’s grandfather.”

He was in the “Midget” tribe…back then the four tribes were called the Mites, Midgets, Juniors, and Seniors.  Now they are the Newts, Waterdogs (Dogs), Salamanders (Manders), and Mollyhuggers (Huggers).

Robert King is about the same age now as John was when he was at camp in 1956.  Robert is going to be a Waterdog this coming summer, taking part in some of the same activities that his grandfather was doing back in the ’50s.  What a cool family tradition!

I wonder if anyone else’s grandfathers are in these pictures..?

I also found JB Ernest who was Head of Riflery that year on the next page.  He’s the one who signed John King III’s certificate!  Back in the earlier years of camp we didn’t have the Old Man of the Mountain award.  The campers didn’t receive a canoe paddle as reward for their good citizenship until Nath Thompson implemented that practice for the first time in 1964 and called it the order of the Old Man of the Mountain.  I showed Nath these pictures, and although a great deal of his memory is fading at the age of 83, he and his wife Mary definitely remember A.W. Norman who was the Associate Director in ’56 in the top right of this scanned portion of the ’56 catalogue.SKMBT_C55213040314260

Send an email to rosser@campcarolina.com if you’d like for us to try to find you, one of your relatives or some of your old camp buddies!  It’s always fun delving into a bit of Camp Carolina history, all 90 years of it!!  We have a lot of the old Camp Carolina catalogues, but not all of them.

Happy Thanksgiving!

What a great month we have had here at Camp Carolina! The leaves have turned red, yellow and orange turning Lambs Creek Valley into one of the most beautiful places in town before falling to the ground leaving a crunchy fall colored blanket covering the hills, road sides and roofs. The temperature has been dropping, the winter coats and boots (plus Lulu’s sausage dog coat) have come out of storage and the horses are all growing their woolly mammoth winter coats in preparation for the colder temperature. Summer 2012 seems so long ago as the seasons head to the depth of winter and we now start reminiscing on those wonderful summer days spent in the lakes and rivers, on the trails and simply relaxing in the beautiful area of Western North Carolina.

We would like to thank all of the wonderful families who have opened their homes to host a Camp Carolina Pizza Party this fall and we look forward to travelling to more CCB families home towns in the Spring. We have met some super enthusiastic young campers (and their parents) as we travelled all over the country and we cannot wait have them here for their best summer ever!

Staff hiring is under way with plenty of returnees from 2012, 2011 and 2010 set to return. If there is an inspirational, hard-working person you know will make an amazing CCB counselor please direct them to www.campcarolina.com and fill out a staff application.

We hope all of our campers, families, alumni and counselors have a fabulous Thanksgiving break. We managed to keep some camp fun in our Thanksgiving celebrations with a CCB blessing at dinner as well as a modified Olympic Games.  Here at CCB we are thankful for so much… in particular for the amazing people we have had the opportunity to meet, inspire, be inspired by and influence over the past 88 years. We cant wait to see you all again soon.

Happy Thanksgiving Y’all!

Kylie and Phil Leave Camp Carolina

After an amazing 18 months working at the best place on Earth it is time to say goodbye to Phil “Choco” and Kylie “Shake n Bake”… For a little while! Phil and Kylie arrived in April 2011 from the UK and Australia and have helped Camp with various tasks since then. Phil has been on the white water team during the last 3 summers, has visited many CCB families for our Pizza Parties and helped recruit the awesome 2012 summer staff. Kylie has been on the horseback team for the last 3 years, helped book and plan all the pizza parties, helped recruit the 2012 team and kept parents, campers and counselors updated via Facebook and the CCB blog. They plan to help with staff recruitment for 2013 in Australia.

They will be heading off tomorrow on a road trip of a lifetime heading to Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Nevada and California before heading to Australia for a Perth summer. They both hope to return to Camp Carolina for another amazing summer in 2013.

Kylie “The last 18 months at Camp Carolina have been the most rewarding 18 months of my life. I have learned so much, got to know some incredible people, made some friends for life and hopefully taught the campers some cool things over the past 3 summers. CCB is such a special place to me and I am so thankful to Alfred and Ec for helping me make the move over here and making my time so memorable. I hope to see y’all again soon!”

Phil ” I have had a awesome time the last 18 months at Camp Carolina. Its been a great opportunity to experience living in the America and the amazing landscape surrounding Brevard. I have thoroughly enjoy teaching white water kayaking over the last 3 summers and I am already looking forward to  summer 2013 at CCB.

Kylie and Phil’s emails will still be checked daily by Mary Ec at info@campcarolina.com
